Tanker Truck Fire Closes I-5 for 12 Hours

A tanker truck fire shut down a section of I-5 for 12 hours on Thursday, while emergency crews put out the flames and repaired the damaged roadway. The driver and his passenger both observed smoke coming from the engine at around 4:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon. The engine then burst into flames. Fortunately, the two drivers escaped the cab of the truck without injury. The freeway was reopened at around 4:30 a.m. Friday morning.

Accidents such as these are often caused by trucking company negligence. Trucking companies are required to maintain their fleet according to federal and state standards. Failure to do so can give rise to liability in the event that the poor vehicle maintenance causes injury in an accident. If you or a loved one was injured in a truck accident caused by poor vehicle maintenance, contact the experienced Seattle accident lawyers at Peizer, Richards & Ziontz at (206) 682-7700 to discuss your case. Impaired Driver Arrested in Wrong-Way Crash

A man was arrested for suspected DUI on Saturday afternoon after he drove his pickup the wrong way on Interstate 90 near Liberty Lake, causing a head-on collision with a semi truck. The driver, Jeremy Mund, 27, of Spokane Valley, apparently crashed through the median in his '67 Chevy pickup at around 3:30 p.m. Saturday. A semi truck driver traveling in the opposite direction was able to slam on the brakes and reduce his truck's speed to 45 mph before the crash. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured.

Wrong-way crashes such as this one, while infrequent, are more likely than other types of accidents to result in death or serious injury. Statistics show that the majority of wrong-way crashes are caused by impaired drivers under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Victims injured in wrong-way crashes deserve compensation for their medical bills, physical pain, emotional trauma, and lost wages that result from the accident.

If you were injured or someone you love was killed in any type of accident, contact the experienced Seattle accident lawyers at Peizer, Richards & Ziontz at (206) 682-7700 to discuss your case. Pedestrians Hit, Killed by Portland City Bus

Two pedestrians were killed and three others injured by a city bus in Portland on Saturday night. The group was walking to a comedy club when the bus, which was not in service, hit them while turning onto NW Broadway Boulevard. Two women were killed, one man was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, and two others - a man and a woman - suffered only minor injuries. The cause of the crash is under investigation, but police say that speed does not appear to be a factor in the accident. The driver of the bus has not been arrested.

Pedestrian accidents such as this one are tragic because of the serious injuries and death that often result. Unbelted Passenger Killed in Crash, Driver Arrested

Police arrested the 22-year-old driver of a Honda that hit a construction barrier on Interstate 5 in Seattle late Monday night and crashed into the back of a Department of Transportation vehicle. A 25-year-old passenger in the vehicle would most likely still be alive if he had been wearing his seat belt, according to hospital officials. Both the driver and passenger were rushed to a local hospital, where the passenger was pronounced dead. The driver, who was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide.

As Seattle accident attorneys, we know firsthand that using safety belts can save lives and help prevent personal injuries when auto accidents occur. In Washington, all drivers and passengers 16 years of age or older are required by law to buckle up. In addition, the driver of the vehicle is responsible for ensuring that all children under 16 are either secured in a federally-approved child safety seat or wearing a seat belt. Observing these seat belt laws can help prevent tragedy in the event of a car accident.

If you or a loved one was injured as a passenger in a car accident, contact the experienced Seattle accident lawyers at Peizer, Richards & Ziontz at (206) 682-7700 to discuss your case. Driver Killed in Large Truck Accident

The driver of a passenger car was killed this morning when he crashed into the back of a semi that was parked on the side of the highway. The accident occurred on southbound Highway 167 near Auburn when the 29-year-old driver smashed into the rear end of the parked tractor-trailer. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The driver of the truck was not injured in the crash. The cause of the accident is under investigation.

Large trucks often have to stop on the side of the road because of mechanical problems or shifted loads, or even to get some rest in order to comply with hours of service obligations for commercial drivers. However, truck drivers are required under federal law to immediately activate the truck's hazard lights and place warning devices on the traffic side of the truck at distances of 10 feet and 100 feet from the disabled commercial vehicle. Failure to follow these safety precautions may make it difficult for other motorists to see the disabled vehicle.

If you were injured or someone you love was killed in a crash involving a large truck, contact the experienced Seattle accident lawyers at Peizer, Richards & Ziontz at (206) 682-7700 to discuss your case. Toyota Sued over Lost Value of Vehicles

Toyota owners from Normandy Park are suing the automaker over the lost value of their vehicle in the wake of recent product defects and recall announcements. The lawsuit was filed in federal court, and, if approved by a judge, could become a class action involving over 100 other Toyota owners in Washington State. The plaintiffs allege that the Toyota defects violate Washington's Consumer Protection Laws and constitutes breach of contract.

The complainants, Dana and Doug Wallace, bought a Toyota RAV4 in September 2009. They received a recall notice shortly after purchase, which instructed them to take the vehicle to a local dealer for repairs. The lawsuit alleges, however, that amid news reports that Toyota doesn't know exactly what is causing the braking and acceleration problems, their vehicle is worth almost 20% less than what it was when they purchased it. If successful, the class action suit could end up costing the company upwards of $5 million.

If you have experienced a loss of value on your recently purchased Toyota vehicle, contact the Seattle accident attorneys at Peizer, Richards & Ziontz at (206) 682-7700 to discuss your case. Spanaway Pastor Dies in Motorcycle Crash

A local pastor was killed Sunday when his motorcycle crashed with a passenger vehicle on Eighth Avenue South in Roy. Thom Carlson, 43, was transported to a local medical center, where he died from his injuries at just before 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon. Carlson served as pastor at the Real Life Family Center in Spanaway. His congregation held services Sunday to mourn their loss.

This accident is a sad reminder of just how deadly a motorcycle crash can be. When motorcycles are involved in accidents with passenger vehicles, motorcyclists and their passengers are more likely to suffer serious, debilitating injuries, or be killed as a result of the accident than are passengers of other vehicles involved in the accident. If your loved one was killed or injured in a Seattle motorcycle accident, you may have a claim for wrongful death. An experienced Seattle accident lawyer can help bring the responsible parties to justice in your case.

Two Boys Killed in Drunk Driving Crash

Two young brothers were killed in a car crash Saturday while traveling home from a monster truck show in Tacoma. Their mother was driving them home when she crossed over the center divider into oncoming traffic. An SUV struck the passenger side of the car, injuring the woman's 8- and 11-year-old sons, who later died at a local hospital. The driver of the SUV was not seriously injured. The boys' mother is suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol and may be charged with vehicular manslaughter.

Sadly, drunk driving crashes such as this one are often fatal. Statistics show that drunk driving deaths make up 43% of all traffic fatalities in Washington. In 2008, 225 of the state's 521 traffic fatalities were alcohol related. The Seattle accident lawyers at Peizer, Richards & Ziontz have extensive experience litigating wrongful death cases. 1 Killed, 1 Injured in Kent Accident

One man was killed and another person was injured in a two-vehicle accident in Kent on Saturday. The accident occurred when a 53-year-old man attempting to turn onto North Washington Avenue failed to yield the right of way to an oncoming vehicle. He was killed in the accident. Fortunately, the driver of the other vehicle suffered only minor injuries.

Failing to yield the right of way to other drivers and pedestrians caused 13 percent of Washington’s 119,000 traffic accidents in 2008. These accidents result in severe injuries and even death. If you have been injured in an auto accident, contact a skilled Seattle car accident lawyer to discuss the details of your case. You may be entitled to compensation for your injuries from the driver who caused the accident.
