Survey: Texting While Driving on the Rise in Washington

A recent survey conducted by PEMCO Insurance revealed that texting while driving may have increased by as much as 50% in the past year and a half. Nearly 18% of people surveyed in June admitted to either reading or sending text messages while behind the wheel, up from only 6% in February of 2008. Washington state law deems texting while driving a “secondary offense,” which means that you must be pulled over for another offense in order to receive a citation for texting while driving.

Driver distractions cause scores of automobile accidents each year. According to a study conducted by the by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI), driver distraction contributes to 80 percent of all automobile accidents in the United States. Driver negligence, such as texting while driving, talking on a cell phone, or tending to children in the vehicle, is the leading cause of auto accidents each year. People injured in accidents caused by inattentive drivers should contact an experienced Seattle accident lawyer in order to seek recovery for their injuries.

The police were called to the scene of the accident at about 6:15 Tuesday morning to find a woman in her 20s lying on the ground unconscious. She was rushed to Harborview Medical Center to be treated for life-threatening injuries. Police are still investigating, trying to determine whether this was a hit-and-run accident.

"Stop on Red Week" Targets Red Light Runners

The Seattle Police Department is targeting red-light runners as part of “Stop on Red Week,” a nationwide initiative designed to crack down on red light violations. The city relies heavily on cameras to help reduce injuries and fatalities that result from red light running. Seattle already has 28 cameras set up at intersections around the city to catch red light runners, and two more cameras will be installed by the end of the summer.

Aggressive driving, such as red-light running, is the primary contributing factor in a large number of traffic crashes each year. According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) studies, red light running is second only to drunk driving and failure to wear a seat belt as contributing factors causing fatal auto accidents in the U.S. Over 1,000 people die in these types of accidents each year, and tens of thousands more are injured. If you have suffered injuries because of a red light violation, an experienced Seattle accident lawyer can help you get compensation for your physical pain, medical bills, and lost wages.
