Survey: Texting While Driving on the Rise in Washington

A recent survey conducted by PEMCO Insurance revealed that texting while driving may have increased by as much as 50% in the past year and a half. Nearly 18% of people surveyed in June admitted to either reading or sending text messages while behind the wheel, up from only 6% in February of 2008. Washington state law deems texting while driving a “secondary offense,” which means that you must be pulled over for another offense in order to receive a citation for texting while driving.

Driver distractions cause scores of automobile accidents each year. According to a study conducted by the by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI), driver distraction contributes to 80 percent of all automobile accidents in the United States. Driver negligence, such as texting while driving, talking on a cell phone, or tending to children in the vehicle, is the leading cause of auto accidents each year.
